While Supplies Last...
Posted by erin at February 28, 2003 11:55 AMI better get my internet fix quick, as I'm getting a new computer here at work at about 2pm.
I won't be able to answer any more email after that until about 6pm - if that - as I don't know how much I'll actually be home after work.
Not only am I getting a new computer, but the entire company is upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows XP, and from Word 6 to Word 2000, all in one wrenching transition that is sure make things explode internally. That's what I meant by "Infopocalyse" ... something everyone failed to comment on in my last post.

Follow-up:
They did, in fact, get my crappy laptop installed by the end of the day.
IT Chick: So are you going to take that home with you?
Me: I didn't plan on it, no.
IT Chick: You're going to lock it in the cabinent then, right?
Me: Oh, I hadn't thought of that.
IT Chick: Wait, why did they give you a laptop if you're not going to take it home with you?
Me: I don't know.

Well, seeing as you're not using it, can I have the laptop?

No... because it will be my only computer at work... so I will actually be using it all the goddamn time.
I hate laptops.
It's an IBM Thinkpad by the way.

But IBM thinkpads are pretty much the best PC laptops there are... wait, why do you hate t so much?

You should have told her that you intend to take the laptop in and use it to f33k her firewall or something.
Note: If you look very carefully at today’s (2/2) Bruno you will spot six household pets (not humans).

I hate laptop keyboards, mice, and monitors. However, they were kind enough to give me regular keyboard to chain to it and real mouse to attach. The monitor on this thing is actually OK as laptop monitors go. But I have to kind of hunch down in my chair in order to look at the screen. Maybe I can find a phone book to set it on or something...
Also, I'm annoyed because everyone else is getting cool flatscreen monitors and DVD burners... I don't think that this Thinkpad has a CD burner. Gah!
Worse still is the idea that they gave me a laptop because they expect me to work at home... on weekends... Now, that wouldn't be so bad, if it didn't mean Friday nights. My coworker D---- has told horror stories of staying up until 4am to test something, only to find out that the test was cancelled and nobody bothered to tell her (the tester).
So far, I have only had to work at home once, on a Saturday, becuase there was an emergency, and really I was supposed to go into the office for that. Having a laptop means that they'll feel free to make me work anytime on the weekend.
