Best Birthday Party Ever?
Posted by erin at April 26, 2003 04:20 PMMy birthday party at N.'s aapartment was a huge success!
I think everyone had a lot of fun, and there was maybe only one awkward moment.
I got super-great gifts, each one better than the last, it seemed! I might post a list of these awesome gifts later.
This morning I watched "Only Yesterday", which is not a Miyazaki film, but is a Ghibli film, etc. It was super good!
However, part of the DVD skipped in the middle and I missed an important scene. I wouldn't have realized it, but then I went to look up the lyrics to an untranslated song. I found that nausicaa.net has the whole script online, with great notes, and I was able to read about the scenes I missed.
So um... in conclusion, Thanks everyone for coming to my party!!!

These were the song lyrics:
TV (OFF) (Hyokkori Hyohtan [Popped-up Gourd] Island Theme
Song)Waves splash, splash, splash, splash as they are parted.
Splash, splash, splash!Clouds zip, zip, zip, zip, as they speed past.
Zip, zip, zip!Where is Hyohtan Island going?
Where is it headed, as it brings us along?Where the sea meets the horizon of the earth,
TAEKO and TV (unison, singing)
Something must be waiting. You may have hard times,
You may have sad experiences,
But we will never be discouraged:
We don't want to cry, so let's laugh--
Go ahead!
Hyokkori Hyohtan Island, Hyokkori Hyohtan Island,
Hyokkori Hyohtan Island...Notes on the song:
{This program is Hyokkori Hyohtan Island (Popped-up Gourd Island), a televised puppet show very similar to a cross between "Beany and Cecil", "Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood", and the "Muppets" set on a floating island. It ran an impressive 1224 episodes over a span of five years, between 1964 and 1969. It attracted many viewers with its modern-day storyline and songs, as well as with its fresh wide cast of characters. The character "Don Gabacho" seen here is the self-proclaimed President (only recognized by himself as such) of the island. He also loves chickens, and it is part of his daily schedule to behave like one. He also makes the sound of the endangered Toki crane. He is played by Arihiro
Fujimura.}Courtesy of Nausicaa.net

Birthdays are about getting stuff, and they've always been. It's OK to be happy about receiving things. I don't understand how it's gauche to say "yay, I got presents!". It's not like she's saying "the presents I got are more plentiful and better than the presents you got!"
What the hell? maybe Rick's just jealous.

It's gauche in that it's another way to say "The first few present I got were the worst"

It would be if you were someone who paid no attention to context and connotations. Let me break it down for you:
"I got super-great gifts, each one better than the last, it seemed!"
The opening phrase explicitly states that all the gifts in question were 'super-great.' The subject also mentions that 'it seemed' that each gift was better than the one that preceded it. This is not a definite statement. Plus, the use of the exclamation point at the end reinforces the idea that the subject was very excited about all the gifts she received that evening. In effect, the statement that the subject made should be read as such: "All of these gifts were super-great! It is amazing that the second gift seems better than the first because the first was extremely fantastic. It is also amazing that the third gift seems more amazing than the first two because those gifts were utterly terrific, etc."
I hope I have been able to clarify this statement for you, Rick.

Sorry, it's still gauche.

Perhaps Rick is sore because his present was first...thus making his gift only super terrific, and not super duper terrific.
I will cry for your pain.

Nah, he's just trying to distract you from the fact that he took back his very excellent gift of Mazes & Monsters from Erin and gave it to me (along with Erin's additional year of age). I think you'll agree that gift-rescinding and age acceleration are both VERY gauche.

The phrase struck me as excited and happy and not gauche. I think Rick is being a sourpuss because he doesn't have a Korean wife yet. We should chip in and order him a mail-order bride for *his* birthday. There's still a month and a bit.

Rick IS bitter. Rick, your gift was super-great, and Dr. Essex is right. I had no idea how anyone could come up with a better gift than Rick's, but every following gift was also amazing.

I had fun at the party too, despite Molly the cat kicking my ass with her dander, and it was nice to meet many of you.
And I would be happy to offer Erin a copy of "Only Yesterday" on VHS so she can see those missing scenes. But maybe later I'll take it back and give it to N instead.
Rick, if it makes you feel better, I think my gift made it in slightly ahead of yours, but yours was obviously better because mine was hidden in N's room, despite Erin's assurance that "Everyone would be jealous." If by everyone she meant no one, her statement was accurate. :)

My concern after your gift Eugene, was that no one else would bring anything, and then they'd feel bad if I was all, "Look what Eugene gave me!"
Instead I hurt Rick.
Yesss!!

As a matter of scientific curiosity, I would very much like to know what it is Mr. Eugene gave the subject?
