Hot, hot Go-Playing Action!
Posted by erin at July 2, 2003 04:24 PMYou people seriously don't understand how good Hikaru No Go is. What if they showed it on Kids WB?! MY GOD, PEOPLE, GO PLAYING WOULD TAKE AMERICA BY STORM!!! I'm telling you, invest in Go-manufacturers in America now, because this game is bigger than Yu-Gi-Oh in Japan (see yesterday's link for more info).
Anyway, today's Hikaru No Go fandom on my part includes:
- Planning a trip to the New York Go Institute.
- Adding Sai as an Avatar on Jerksquad.
- Searching endlessly for good Hikaru No Go wallpaper and IM icons.

Wow three posts in a row all about the same cartoon. Is this some daring attempt by Erin to lose her readership?
Anyhow, I'd like to borrow the show, so I can watch it and judge for myself how good it is.

It's a good thing you guys finally commented. I was just going to keep posting about Go until I got a comment.

Sure you're not going to work for Viz, since you're promoting them so much?
Anyway, I will definitely check this show out when I can get a hold of it. Although all this hype is only bound to disappoint me in the end...
And I may pick up playing Go again. I used to play, you know, when I was little. Only I called it Paduk, which is the Korean name for it. I have a nice set and everything if anyone fancies a game. I will need a refresher on the rules though.

I think I used to play Go as a kid too. Anyway, how am I supposed to download this exactly?

John, you can't download it, it's been lisenced. That's why I was in such a hurry to get all of it. You could only buy shady Chinese knock-off disks at this point, or I could burn you some CDs. But that would be illegal.
Eugene, they talk about Korea in the show, and say how Go is huge there, it's even more popular in Korea than in Japan. There are some Korean characters, and their drawn with lines for eyes. Which is kind of racist, I think.
But anime is like that - sometimes Chinese characters are drawn with huge buck teeth and have wacky accents. Koreans have no eyes, apparently. In Ping Pong Club, the American kid is six feet tall, covered in body hair, and has a bad case of B.O. In Tsuagi Ran there's an American girl who's an 8-foot-tall blonde with the wrong idea about samuri.

I would also like to play Go. I was told it's similar to Pente. Is that true?
I hear the rules are simple but the strategy's a killer (as a matter of fact, a test for a good AI is whether it can play Go well) - what are the rules then?

There's a very good British page about it here. It has history and arguments as to why Go is awesome (although more eloquently put).
I've also put some links on Jerksquad about where to find out how to play.

There is a giant go section at the bookstore I just went to. Cool go facts:
Rank is measured by belt, a la judo. You can actually say `I`m a third degree go black belt`.
In ancient times you could play as fast as you could put down stones, and blocking the other player was OK.
Traditionally the white stones were carved from human bones, often the bones of an opposing clan`s warriors.
