Video Game Pitch
Posted by erin at August 5, 2003 03:06 PMI'm going to make a million dollars.
I thought of this idea for a video game while we were perusing Hal's high school yearbook on Friday night.
In the video game, you play Jimi Hendrix. The year is 1966 and you're just about to become a rockstar. Suddenly an evil time-travelling mad scientist steals your lyric notebook! You must then steal his time machine and travel into the future, where you can recover your lyrics only by searching through old high school yearbooks you find in people's homes. You must avoid getting caught by the police (and homeowners) as you struggle to find the words to all your songs.

I don't see why you should have to play an untalented drug addict like Hendrix.

Because he's quoted in the greatest number of high school yearbooks from 1969 to the present. Sure, the game could be about U2, but that would cover fewer decades.

I should point out that it was actually Chris's yearbook; we just happened to go to the same high school.

Hendrix was untalented!? by whose standards? those of the 'We Like Crap' Institution?
although he was a junkie.

I'm not going to respond to the Hendrix is untalented line. I mean, that's just fucking idiotic.
But really, Hendrix certainly wasn't known for his 'lyrics' no matter how many high school yearbooks they appear in. I seem believe it was something do with a guitar.
In any case, I always liked how DJ Shadow said he wanted to be known as the Hendrix of the sampler.

Listen to Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman, Luca Turilli, etc. All can school Hendrix. He could play but by today's baseline talent for hard rock standard, he'd get blown away.

Henrix cannot be a great guitarist because he's not blind. The only non-blind people who are great guitarists are cripples and Mississippi John Hurt.
I think Erin wants us all to post top five guitarists lists.

As to Jay's suggestion..
Wow they can play guitar really, really fast. How fascinating. But the difference between them and Hendrix is that Hendrix made interesting music.
For example... typing really fast does not make one a good writer.
As to monsieur Malmsteen... Unleash the Fury!
"YNGWIE MALMSTEEN threatened to kill a fellow passenger on a flight to Tokyo, Japan after the woman poured a glassful of water on the guitarist.
The passenger, who had no prior contact with Yngwie, allegedly overheard Malmsteen making derogatory comments about homosexuals and decided to show her disapproval by emptying the contents of her glass on the hefty axeman.
A member of Yngwie's touring entourage, who was traveling with Malmsteen at the time, had a tape recorder running and managed to catch Yngwie's reaction on tape immediately after the guitarist was "assaulted" by the offended passenger. "

Fast playing isn't everything. Petrucci is amazing when he's not playing fast, as are all the others with the exception of Slayer. Listen to some of the ballads they've done. They're more melodic and sonically rich than Hendrix ever was. I'd also like to see Hendrix play an arpeggio scale.
Yeah that Malmsteen tape was funny. The man is an ass but he is an awesome player despite the fact that I don't like his music. That tape was actually made in the mid 80's and only surfaced recently. Blabbermouth actually posted a list of Malmsteen tour dates under the heading of "Yngwie Malmsteen "Unleashing the Fucking Fury" at the following dates."
Here's my list. Granted it's not who I think is the most talented, but that is a consideration. The criteria I used were uniqueness of music, techinical skill, songwriting ability and an intangiblity factor.
5. Dave Mustaine (Megadeth)
3. Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman (both of Slayer, tie)
2. Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray, ex-Helloween)
1. Luca Turilli (Rhapsody)

1. I'm sick of hearing that Jimi Hendrix was the most talented person who ever lived. The claim seems to be the equivalent of saying that Kurt Cobain was the greatest songwriter of his generation, the people who make the claim are romanticising these people because they died at their prime and the people who are making these claims don't know a lot about music, so they don't really have a good talent pool to compare their icons to.
2. I fail to see what's so great about talent. A synclavier is more talented than most musicians and I fail to see any other than Frank Zappa fawning over it.
3. Snakefinger is the greatest guitarist ever.

Top 5 guitarists who aren't blind or crippled:
1. Maybelle Carter
2. Mississippi John Hurt
3. Bill Monroe
4. Chuck Berry
5. Dick DaleNote that this list takes into account guitar-playing only, not songwriting or other merits. Talent is a factor, as are innovation, taste, and how cool and fun the guitar sounds.
I'm sure Hendrix was a very talented young man, but his music doen't interest me very much. If I want to hear instrumental masturbation I'll listen to prog rock or free jazz. Buddy Holly also died in his prime (and it wsn't even his fault), and was a superior guitarist. I can't see how anyone could beleive that the output of Hendrix's hypothetical "next five years" would come anywhere close to the output of Holly's.
