Why Hating President Bush Makes You A Boring Person
Posted by erin at September 27, 2003 01:53 PMI should preface this by saying that I am not a particularly political person. I couldn’t care less about the lives of politicians, and I don’t vote very often, as I don’t feel informed enough to make that kind of decision.
So what I am about to say is largely an aesthetic statement: Hating President Bush makes you a boring a person.Maybe it’s because I have been living in the Village so long, and how many of my coworkers are what I refer to as “Village Liberals,” but I’m downright bored with people criticizing Bush. At first it was harmless taunts about Bush’s poor public speaking ability, and his tendency to make up new words, but ever since the war, the jabs at Bush have been even more boring and repetitive.
I just wish that people would come up with new and interesting critiques of the Bush administration. Here are some topics I’d like to see people avoid, for the sake of boredom:
1. Iraq
2. Oil
3. The Environment
4. Tax Cuts for the Rich (or taxes in general)
5. Terrorism and/or The Patriot ActDon’t people understand that blindly disagreeing with everything the president does is ill-informed and foolish? It seems to me that most people who critique the Bush administration are not terribly well informed. The more they protest, in fact, the less they seem to know.
There is an excellent Doctor Who quote on the matter: “You, sir, are a classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain.”
In conclusion I should like to add that I always try to avoid discussing at length topics on which I am ill-informed, and that I wish everyone else would do the same.

not everyone critiquing Bush for those reasons is ill-informed. some are hyper-informed and yell at me for not wanting to lynch Bush outright. of course, other hyper-informed people yell at me for not calling Bush a god.

It doesn't really matter how well informed they are, they're boring. They're always yelling about the same five things, over and over.
If you're going to yell about Bush, you'd better do it in some new and interesting way, that's all I'm saying.

The San Francisco Bay area suffers from a similar problem. For this (and some other) reason I registered as a Republican for the recall vote. When you say "I am registered as a Republican" most people around here shut up, though sometimes they spit on you first.

Has the "he looks like a goddamned monkey" meme worn itself out yet?

I'm sorry anthony, but I'm going to have to kill you.

Erin, you should read the NYTimes articles regarding Bush. They don't involve the five issues you just listed, and the NYTimes knows better than to be outwardly obnoxious. If you want some aesthetically pleasing Bush-bashing, read their articles - they're nice and subtle.
Also, what about the choke-on-a-pretzel, fall-off-the-segway, and drop-a-dog-onto-concrete-floor memes?

When he choked on a prezel, that's when I decided I liked Bush better than his detractors. How lame of a criticism is that? Oh, our president sucks because he choked on a prezel! PU-leeeze!

Ha! Sure, my criticism may suck, but at least I'm not a registered Republican!

Well put, AK. He choked on a pretzel, so therefore he's a bad president. What the hell is the thinking process behind that? Or I don't like the way he talk's he's a bad president.
And christ the NY Times? One would have thought their string of scandals 3 or 4 months ago would have hurt their credibility a little.
I'd mind criticisms of the president less if there was some content behind them.

I highly recommend any sound clips of Mayor Bloomberg speaking to the press. It's great! The press asks him ureasonable questions, and he always responds with a tone of voice that seems to imply, "Are you people totally crazy?! No reasonable person would as that kind of question!"
I'm not really sure how well Bloomberg is handeling his office, but I certainly enjoy hearing him speak on the news. He seems to constantly be asking, "Have all you people gone mad?!"

Once, someone at a conference kept asking him stupid questions, so he threw a fit, yelled at the press something along the lines of "is this really the most you can ask for? don't you have your priorities set better?" and left the conference. It was pretty amusing.
As for why Bush sucks. First of all, you shouldn't support him ONLY because you hate SOME of those who dislike him. It would be like not watching Futurama ONLY because SOME people who watch TV are morons.
I wasn't gonna get into a serious political debate on Bush's policies and I will not now as it is pretty obvious what Rick's standpoint is and that he won't change his mind no matter what and that AK thinks that registering as a Republican gives her an edge. I think I'm gonna stick with Erin and say that politics should be watched from afar and the only opinion you should have about it is an aesthetic one as you really can't do anything about it other than annoy your friends with your pointless and boring drivel about patriotism (tm) and about how hipsters are bad.

Wellll... I'm not saying having no opinion is the way to go, but more like, having the same opinion as everyone else and then never shutting up about it is not OK.
It's one thing to annoy your friends with your politics, but it's another thing to annoy you coworkers, or even strangers with your whiny drivel.

Well Maggie, I actually may change my mind if I encounter a reasoned argument as to why Bush is bad (by the way, I'm far from a militant Bush supporter, but most of my criticism comes from the right). I've changed my mind on subjects before (just ask N.) But I won't change my mind if you tell me he is a Nazi or site some internet scam about him being a certifiable moron.
I tend to take the view if you can't defend your opinions, you shouldn't have them. So if it turns out that I can't defend my opinions then I'll gladly abandon them. I'm all for engaging in an open debate on Bush. Are you? Or are you afraid that you may not have that much basis for your beliefs after all?
October 2, 2003 12:03 PM, Maggie said:
Rick, I have never said that Bush is a Nazi or cited internet scams about him being a certifiable moron. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever discussed Bush or his politics with you, so you should't be going around assuming what my opinions on the matter may or may not be.
Also, nobody's ever tried to get me to discuss politics on the basis of "what are you, chicken?" before. So congratulations on being the first.
October 3, 2003 09:35 AM, Rick said:
You're right. Maggie. Your critiques of Bush's choking on a pretzel, having fallen down and having dropped a dog were much more intelligent than Nazi slander or falsified IQ tests.
And you are chicken. You made comments disparaging of Bush and republicans and the second someone called them into question, you decided you didn't want to get into a debate. If you can't defend your opinions, don't have opinions.

Rick - read stuff in context. I didn't say "Bush is bad because of the pretzel/segway/dog thing." Instead, I said "Also, what about the choke-on-a-pretzel, fall-off-the-segway, and drop-a-dog-onto-concrete-floor memes?" Which, if you read Erin's thread carefully, is an extension of her list of types of boring arguments against Bush.
Also, please cite the "comments disparaging of Bush and republicans" upon which you're basing your beliefs regarding my view on Bush's politics.
