I'm Mixed Company

Something happened very early this morning that stuck in my mind and bugged me for hours. It was the kind of thing I'd normally forget about, but it happened the first thing when I work up, so maybe it just got stuck in my head.

One of my roommates was relaying a phone message to my other roommate, and they said, "But I can't tell you in mixed company." I was the only other person there! I'm mixed company?

Granted, it could have been about a gynocology appointment or menstruation or something, and I guess I wouldn't have wanted to hear about that, or maybe severe constipation or hemmorroids or whatever, but still... the mystery is worse.

I'm mixed company? Maybe the phrasing was just overly polite.
