Not Gay Enough For Tokyopop

So first of all, I have a cold. It's pretty gross. I started getting sick Friday afternoon, and it's been a snot festival since then.

Second, me and Alison did not win the Tokopop contest after all. I got word in the mail today.

I'm fairly pissed about it. I mean, we worked really hard and our entry looks really great. I've seen the crap they published in the other two Rising Stars volumes, and I can safely say that we obviously should have won.

But I probably shouldn't get too mad about it. After all, look at some of Tokyopop's titles. I mean, should I really be upset that our comic was not as gay as Demon Diary, or as generic as Girl Got Game, or as frickin' lame as Reality Check, or as god-awful bad as Zodiac Detective , or as mildly offensive as @Large?

Now that it won’t be published officially, if you haven’t seen our comic you can read it here: Mandy and the Space Pirate Spcae Vampire War, with backgrounds and script by me, and characters, inking and effects by Alison.

Thirdly, it’s too hot for April. 80 degrees? Maybe that’s why I’m sick.

Condolences on your loss. I thought your entry was great. We should mount a revenge campaign for you.

That comic was super awesome.

Are there other places you could submit it to? Are there other contests around like the Tokyopop's one?

Sorry you didn't win. Your comic was, indeed, very cool, and should've won hands down. You definitely should consider entering it in other competitions.

Very cool comic. :) Maybe they were being pedants since your comic didn't read right-to-left?

Make sure any contests you enter into don't make you surrender your rights to it (Tokyopop doesn't seem to be one).

I keep thinking that we all should organize a small press. It probably wouldn't make a profit, but we might be able to break even, and there are all kinds of small press distributors. It could be "Cephalopod Press". Or something like that.

I've thought of that before.

Someone asked me what I would do with a million dollars, and I said I'd start a company to publish all my friends' books.

Oh, yeah, Helen I know who you are. Duuuuh.

I wonder if we could get some kind of government grant. If we made it non-profit and had the people running it women, it migth be easier. I'm going to look into this... Otherwise, what the hell am I going to do with myself after I graduate in June?

You can live in my attic for a while :)

I'm up for the publishing thing.

Looter!

i think your comic is excellent. i have another friend vying for the rising stars crown (she is entering the final competition), so i know the stress level is high, and the other winners are bad, so i understand the frustration.

what was with the one about the girl and her ferret? jeez.

i think a publishing company is the best possible thing for you AK. it would a good funnel for your creative energy. i would love to be involved.
even without a publishing company, try to sell your manga, erin. maybe on cafepress??

oh, btw, Happy Birthday!

(ps. i started watching UFO Princess Valkyrie after i read your review. i love it for all the wrong reasons. i may cosplay as Sanada, the cat-girl maid/bodyguard. haha.)

Rick, with regards to your snide remark:

I am only trying to get back the money that I rightfully should have earned but was instead taken away in excessive taxes, and the money my family rightfully should have earned but was taken away in excessive taxes.

A government grant for a small press is unlikely to give me a fraction of the money that my father could have given me if he had not been giving so much of his money to taxes. (And I know he would be very happy to help me start a business, had he the capacity)

So, no, not "looter" asshole. I am only trying to make right the wrong which has been, is, and will continue to be perpertrated against me.

While it's true you didn't petition the government to create whatever programs there are out there that would give you money and that you'd probably be getting less back than what was stolen from you, taking their money would make you complicite in their robbery. But so long as you realize it's stealing and have no illusions about the nature of those programs, fine.

Rick is correct. It is not only your money you are 'getting back,' but others' money as well - mine, for instance. Any justification on your part for taking the money is just a rationalization.

This is no excuse for Rick to call you names, but it is the case.
