Four Things in New York

A coworker of N.'s once made the incredibly wise observation that there are four things... four parts of every person's life in New York. These things are:

1. Your Health
2. Your Housing
3. Your Finances (and/or Employment)
4. Your Love Life

These are the four basic things - and what one must know about living in New York (although this may apply to other places, too) - is that you can only have three of the things on the list going well for you at any given time.

If you live in a great apartment and have a terrific girlfriend and you're totally healthy, you might be unemployed or in debt. If your finances are fine and your love life is great and you haven't got a cold, then surely your roommates are going to start trouble. If your co-op apartment totally rules and you just paid off your credit card and you're getting married soon, surely you're about to catch the cancer.

I'm thankfully getting over this hacking cough I've had all week, but my finances are on shaky grounds, thanks to the whole working-two-days-a-week gig. Hopefully soon, though, I'll have a new job (with the same company).
